Community Betterment Donation

When I saw Ron Kinzler at the post office one day last week, he said with a smile, “You better drop by the office. I have a surprise for you.”
Fifteen minutes later I learned of the delightful surprise. Ron handed me a note that the newspaper had received in the mail. Inside the note was a thousand dollar check made out to me.
From an anonymous donor in California with connections to Putnam County, the note stated the very generous contribution was to be used to ensure the “Home of the Midgets” signs at the east and west limits of Unionville would be made attractive again.
This unselfish gentleman has made other bountiful donations to our school and community in past years. Since he reads the Unionville Republican, I speak for all our citizens, “We are sincerely grateful!” I have sent him a “thank you” note.
Immediately, I went to the Putnam County State Bank and discussed the matter with Chris Fleshman. We both agreed the bank should hold the check for safekeeping until the PC Boosters Club meets in two weeks. Both of us expect the club will establish a special bank account. There will likely be more donations to this project.
Because Chris and I both realize this project must involve the entire community and school, I reported the generous donation to PCR1 Schools Superintendent Heath Halley. At an anticipated Boosters Club meeting after our first home football game on Friday, September 14, the issue will be discussed. I will then endorse the check, and the money will be deposited in the special account.
Besides that noble-minded donor from California, I appreciate Wally Sutton mentioning the eyesore to me. “Something needs to be done,” he said. That’s when I pointed out the ugly signs in my PC Happenings column.
Inspired by such an example of generosity, we must now ensure this project is something the whole community can be proud of. Through my column, separate articles and the school’s website, I will keep the public informed.
